The Arizona State University Sun Devils Final 2012 Regular Season Home Game

Everyone seemed excited for the Arizona State University Sun Devils football final regular season home game on November 17, 2012. I was excited because it would be a day game and I would get to create images in the beautiful sunlight rather than the typical night game, high ISO of most of the ASU games I cover. This was the game when the Sun Devils would celebrate the graduating seniors on the team so a great many of the players had several family members either in the stands or on the sidelines.

You could almost feel the excitement in the air as the teams took the field, and for many of the players, the last time they would play in front of the home crowd.

NCAA College Football – Aug. 30, 2012 NAU at ASU

There are some general guidelines on how to photograph college football, but sometimes you just need to be lucky.

I know, I know nobody likes to read too much text so I’ll use fewer words and more images for everyone out there with attention deficit disorder (ADD). Also, just so you know, NAU is Northern Arizona University, and they are the Lumberjacks and ASU is Arizona State University and they are the Sun Devils.

NCAA College Football — September 8, 2012 Illinois at Arizona State

I haven’t posted any college football this season and I’m not sure why, so I thought I would show you some stuff from a few of the games I covered. I’ll start this with the September 8th, 2012 game between Illinois and ASU.

When one of the coaching staff holds up a sign that says “Nasty” you know this is going to be fun to watch.

NCAA FOOTBALL: SEP 09 Missouri at Arizona State

Yea, more football. With the expected rain the photo room at the stadium was all a buzz, would it rain? Would it rain enough to make mud? Or would it rain just enough to get our gear wet and be annoying? The question was not really IF it would rain, but WHEN it would rain and how much. This being Phoenix Arizona most of the photographers, including myself, don’t have rain gear, after all it doesn’t rain much here and rain gear is expensive.

You can see the rain in this first shot, not enough to make mud, but enough to get our gear wet AND be annoying. Before the game I broke out the plastic bags and tape for my two cameras and put the baggies taped to lens hoods in my pack just in case. It turns out they were helpful.

NCAA FOOTBALL: UC Davis Aggies at Arizona State Sun Devils

It’s college football season and around here there are a bunch of new names and faces to contend with. Arizona State has new uniforms and a new starting quarterback, as well as a bunch of new and returning students.

Let’s bring the Head Coach Dennis Erickson and the rest of the players out onto the field.

They always pump this fog machine up so the players can come running out of the tunnel and the fog, the problem is the fog lingers at ground level for almost the entire first half of the game and makes getting decent images somewhat difficult.

NCAA College Football: OCT 30 Washington State at Arizona State

Oh yea, I just loves me some football, more so because the game started with some sunlight so I didn’t have to start off with 2500 ISO. At first that seemed like that would be the coolest thing since sliced bread, but no not really. Harsh, very bright sun with shadow areas that combined are outside the dynamic range of most digital camera’s sensors. Oh well, try to work with what ya got and being able to use long, slow glass could be fun.

Pump up the volume and let it rip.

NCAA FOOTBALL: OCT 30 Washington State at Arizona State

Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Steven Threet (14) runs onto the field with the rest of the Arizona State Sun Devils at the start of the game. Sometimes you can get good shots of the players coming out of the tunnel with the smoke machines going full-bore behind them, and sometimes it just fills the field with a haze that makes shooting hard. This shot seemed to work for me, getting a shot of the starting quarterback running onto the field seems like a good idea.

As always, if you click the more link you will see more images from the game.

NCAA Football – NAU at ASU Northern Arizona University at Arizona State University

I have been up to my elbows in cycling and fashion show images so I wanted to go back and post some images from a football game.

As a photographer I have good days and bad days. What, how can this be? Well, I’m not the greatest photographer in the world and sometimes I suck even more than I think I should. This was one of the games where I was having an “off” night, couldn’t seem to get a decent shot no matter how hard I tried. All night I just couldn’t seem to get focus lock, time the play correctly or just generally get a decent shot.

Sadly I’m sure I will have more of these games in the future, but in the end I got to practice my football photography try to learn from my mistakes. Here is some of the images I captured for the game.

NCAA FOOTBALL: SEP 11 NAU at ASU

It was an exciting enough game with Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) scrambling out of the pocket a few times just begging me to get a good shot, but I just couldn’t find the flow of the game.

NCAA Division 1 Football: Portland State vs. ASU

I love football! Well, I also love Motorsports, like if football and Motorsports were my kids, I would tell them I love them both the exact same amount.

On with the show.

04 September 2010: Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Steven Threet (14) gets a play from the sidelines during a regular season game between the Portland State Vikings and the Arizona State Sun Devils at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State defeated Portland State 54-9.
