2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – Kobalt Tools 500 from Phoenix International Raceway – part 2

When we last left our hero’s they were hurtling at break-neck speeds towards their doom . . .   Oh wait, that’s not right. Both Tony and Carl were fighting tooth and nail for every inch of track position they could get. That sounds more like where we left our story.

At this point it was anybody’s guess who would win, Tony is a proven champion, but Carl has won here in Phoenix in both his Nationwide car and in his Sprint Cup car, and all on the same weekend.

With Matt Kenseth leading the race and late race pit stops and caution flags making things dicey, a driver’s track position could change dramatically with a bad pit stop.

Matt Kenseth somehow manages to bounce off the wall and that made his day much more difficult, he was really working to keep his pace and was falling back quickly.

Tony Stewart was moving up while some of the back-markers were making a bit of a late race charge.

Matt Kenseth was still struggling but behind him was one of my favorite drivers Kasey Kahne in the number 4 Red Bull Toyota.

Kasey had been lurking back there all day and was now in position to make a bit of a final charge to the front.

Tony Stewart was still out there running strong but his car seemed to be going away a bit and he was fading back.

Kasey makes a late race charge and slips into the lead.

In the closing laps of the race Kasey Kahne makes a charge to the front and takes the win in his Red Bull Toyota.

Kasey Kahne manages a very impressive smoky burnout at the start/finish line almost completely obscuring his car from the fans.

Kasey Kahne’s car was overheating by the time he finished his celebratory burnout and was heading to the Victory Lane and it looked cool in the bright sun.

Gatorade Victory Lane was littered with little wrench and hammer confetti after Kasey Kahne’s celebration for winning the 2011 Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Phoenix International Raceway.

The light was nice on Tony Stewart as he climbed out of his car after the race so I grabbed a few frames.

I wanted to get a few shots of Carl Edwards after the race when the reporters asked him about not winning the race and clinching the ‘chase for the cup’ with only one race left to go in the series and Tony Stewart so close in points.

Tony Stewart look a lot more relaxed than Carl did, maybe that was because he gained points in this race.

Really the story was about Kasey Kahne winning the 2011 Kobalt Tools 500 race at Phoenix International Raceway and the end of the Red Bull Racing team from NASCAR racing for the 2012 season.

If you enjoyed my coverage of the 2011 NASCAR racing and/or know of a NASCAR team that needs a photographer you know I’m up for the job, either way tell me what you think about my coverage.

  1. I would love to cover the races at different tracks, or even be a team photographer, but I think those gigs are tough to come by. I just need to make the connection with the ‘right’ people and who knows what could happen.
