Playing catch up with some NCAA College Basketball from December of 2011

I realized I had not posted any college basketball from this season and I’m sure some sports fans are missing college basketball with March Madness being finished and the Final Four all but a distant memory. It’s hard to pay attention to college basketball when the team you cover is consumed by player’s behaving badly, so much so that they are tossed off the team, the rest of the team not playing well and the fate of team being placed on the shoulders of a single player to carry the team to victory ever week. To top off all that the team plays a bunch of teams no one has heard of or, sadly cares about. What can you do?

17 December 2011: Durrell Norman (34) of the Lumberjacks tries to push inside against the ASU defense during an NCAA Basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe AZ. The Lumberjacks beat the Sun Devils 69-68.

I loved this picture because I could hear the flesh hitting the solid defender’s chest and see the sweat fly off the player’s face as the two crashed together. Although cutting off the defender’s head kinda makes it a fail. Oh well, I never said I was that good of a photographer and I know I still have a lot to learn.

I do, however occasionally make decent mascot and cheerleader, or um spirit squad shots.

17 December 2011: Jonathan Gilling (31) of the Sun Devils during an NCAA Basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe AZ. The Lumberjacks beat the Sun Devils 69-68.

Jonathan is one of the team members that has been asked to step up and is doing a great job for the Sun Devil team.

17 December 2011: Trent Lockett (24) of the Sun Devils drives toward the basket during an NCAA Basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe AZ. The Lumberjacks beat the Sun Devils 69-68.

Trent Lockett has been asked to carry the entire team in many cases and that means lots of playing time and having to face the media after tough losses, not a fun task.

17 December 2011: Stallon Saldivar (21) of the Lumberjacks drives toward the basket during an NCAA Basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe AZ. The Lumberjacks beat the Sun Devils 69-68.

You can’t discount the NAU players in this story, they had to play hard and fight for every inch of the court, but in the end they would put one in the win column.

At this point Sun Devil Keala King was still on the team and I never heard both sides of the story so it’s anybody’s guess how this kids career will play out.

You just gotta love the expression on the NAU player’s face in this shot.

17 December 2011: James Douglas (1) of the Lumberjacks at the line during an NCAA Basketball game between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe AZ. The Lumberjacks beat the Sun Devils 69-68.

My name is Douglas James and this guys name is James Douglas so I had to make sure to grab a few shots of him at the line.

You know I’m still looking for that perfect cheerleader, um I mean ASU Sun Devils Spirit Squad shot, and what can I say, I’m a typical male and I like pretty girls.

This shot should be used for the opening spread of a two-page article about the Arizona State Sun Devils basketball program with headline and intro. text on the left.

I’ll finish off this post with a shot of ASU Basketball head coach Herb Sendek in the press room.

Tell me what you think in the comments, do you want to see shorter post more often, more pictures and less commentary from me, make it more about the photography and less about the story, or do you just want to see more pictures of my cat licking its parts? Just checking to see if you were paying attention with that last one.
