PGA Championship Golf, wait . . . What? Really?

Yes, PGA Golf is a thing, and a big deal thing at that, well at least for some people.

Photographing professional golf is so much different from photographing something like football, it’s an entirely different skill set, but many of the same concepts apply. I like the challenge of photographing professional golf tournaments because of the rules involved with not firing your shutter before the player strikes the ball and dealing with challenging lighting conditions out on the course.

Golf is an exciting sport to a great many people, well at least that is what the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) would like us all to think. I don’t know a whole lot about golf but I enjoy the challenges of trying to make nice photographs during the tournament, so off I went.

Some of the challenges of photographing professional golf are including the environment around the course and as always keeping distracting elements out of your images.

02 November 2012: Mark McNulty hits up to the 8th green during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

02 November 2012: Tom Lehman hits from a bunker on the 8th green during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Sometimes you get lucky and there are no distracting elements in the backgrounds of you images and sometimes, like with the image above you have one of the goofy course workers in just the right place to ruin what would have been a great shot, however it’s not like you can whistle real loud and motion for the guy to move, that would get you tossed from the place real fast so you just do the best you can.

02 November 2012: Bernhard Langer hits a tee shot on the 8th hole during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Also the harsh mid-day sun can make getting the exposures you want very, very challenging forcing some compromises between shadows and highlights.

02 November 2012: Bernhard Langer hits from the fairway on 8 during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

There is a lot of walking around involved with photographing golf and very often the photographers are carrying very heavy gear, so the only other person out on the course that is carrying more gear are the candies.

02 November 2012: Bernhard Langer looks over his putt on the 8th green during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

02 November 2012: Kirk Triplett hits from the first fairway during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

02 November 2012: Roger Chapman hits up to the 3rd green during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

For the second round I took one camera body and an f5.6 zoom lens because it was smaller and lighter to carry around all day. It turned out the f5.6 wasn’t letting me blur the backgrounds as much as I wanted so I took two camera bodies and my big heavy 300 f2.8 lens for the final rounds, and it’s a lot of heavy gear to carry around all day.

02 November 2012: John Cook hits from the 8th fairway during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

02 November 2012: Joe Daley hits from the 8th fairway during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

02 November 2012: Fred Couples on the 18th green during the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at The Desert Mountain Club on November 2, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I hoped you liked my coverage of the PGA Charles Schwab Cup Championship Golf.
